Holset HX40 vs HX40W vs HX40 Super: Differences and Selection

2025-06-03 · Technical · 5 min read

The three HX40 variants are not interchangeable options in the same family. This guide explains the housing, wheel and boost control differences and how to select correctly.

What the family name does and does not tell you

The Holset HX40 family is one of the most widely used turbocharger platforms in commercial vehicles and industrial engines. Buyers often treat HX40, HX40W and HX40 Super as interchangeable options, but they are different build specifications within the same family. The family label tells you the general size class and mounting family; it does not tell you the turbine housing A/R, the compressor wheel trim or the boost control method. Those three parameters decide whether the unit suits your engine. Always match on the OEM part number and the engine application, then use the family name only as a starting point for the search.

HX40: the base fixed version

The plain HX40 is the base, fixed or internally wastegated version used across many mid-range diesel applications. It is built for reliable mid-power duty and does not rely on an external wastegate. Because it is fixed geometry, boost rises with engine speed and load according to the housing and wheel design. When replacing a base HX40, the critical details are the turbine housing A/R and the compressor wheel trim, not the model label. Two base units that look identical externally can deliver noticeably different boost response, so the OEM number remains the deciding reference.

HX40W: adding wastegate boost control

The HX40W adds wastegate boost control, indicated by the W. The wastegate opens to limit boost at higher engine speeds, protecting the engine and giving a more controlled boost curve. Units differ in whether the wastegate is internal or external, and in the actuator setting. Fitting a plain HX40 where the engine was calibrated for an HX40W can leave boost unregulated and change fuelling and emissions behaviour. Conversely, a wastegated unit fitted to an application designed for fixed geometry can under-boost. Match the wastegate configuration and the actuator to the original specification.

HX40 Super: more air for higher power

The HX40 Super uses a larger compressor and higher-flowing housings to move more air mass for engines targeting higher power or running at higher boost. It is often chosen when a standard unit runs out of flow, or when the engine has been intentionally uprated. Because the rotating group and housings differ, HX40 Super parts are not freely interchangeable with base HX40 parts. The upgrade also changes the required fuelling and boost control, so it should be selected as part of an engine tuning decision, not simply as a like-for-like replacement.

How to select correctly

To choose correctly, gather the OEM number from the plate, the engine model and power rating, and the original boost control method. Confirm the compressor wheel trim and the turbine housing A/R. If the engine has been uprated intentionally, an HX40 Super may be appropriate, but it must be matched to the fuelling and wastegate strategy.
