Understanding Turbine Housing Design

The turbine housing guides high-temperature, high-pressure exhaust gases to drive the turbine wheel.

In a turbocharger, due to the different roles and distinct working conditions, there are significant differences in the design of the turbine housing and the compressor housing.

The turbine housing can guide the high-temperature and high-pressure exhaust gas discharged from the engine to impact the turbine blades, converting the energy of the exhaust gas into the rotational kinetic energy of the turbine, and then drive the compressor. It is usually located at the rear end of the turbocharger, connecting to the exhaust manifold of the engine.

1. Flow Path Design

The flow path inside the turbine housing is the exhaust gas passage, usually having a spiral or volute shape. Its cross-sectional area gradually decreases from the inlet to the outlet to increase the exhaust gas flow rate and convert the exhaust gas energy into the rotational kinetic energy of the turbine as efficiently as possible.

2. Materials and Manufacturing Process

Due to the harsh working environment constantly exposed to high temperatures and pressures, its material needs to have high temperature oxidation resistance, high temperature strength, and low coefficient of thermal expansion. Such as gray cast iron, ductile iron, and Austenitic stainless steel. In terms of manufacturing processes, turbine housings are usually produced by casting. To ensure sufficient strength and rigidity to prevent thermal deformation and cracking, the turbine housings are typically quite thick.

3. Maintenance and Precautions

As the turbine housing operates in a high-temperature environment, it is prone to cracks and deformation. We need to check for cracks and deformation, also reduce heat radiation through insulation covers or coating technologies. Regularly cleaning the carbon deposits inside the turbine housing to avoid affecting the turbo performance.
