GM experimented it unsuccessfully in the 1960s on Chevrolet Corvair. BMW resurrected it on the 1973, 2002 Turbo, followed shortly by the 1975 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.0, but both were produced in small quantity and aimed at the performance market. Saab was the first to put it in mass production and on an affordable family car. Saab’s engineers achieved what many thought impossible by adapting turbo technology for everyday road cars. They faced enormous challenges: how to tame the wild nature of turbochargers for civilian use? Their solution is an advanced wastegate control system – delivered explosive power without the notorious “turbo lag” which seriously plagued early turbocharged cars. Although the 99 Turbo’s 2.0-liter engine produced only 145 horsepower, it is enough to make it a true performance beast in the 1970s.
