The design differences between the turbine housing and the compressor housing – the compressor housing

After understanding the relevant design of the turbine housing, we will further supplement the design of the compressor housing. Through comparison, we can more clearly distinguish the differences between the turbine housing and the compressor housing in the turbocharger. 

The outside acompressor housing-2ir is drawn into the compressor impeller through the compressor housing and compressed by the impeller. Then, the compressed air is sent to the engine’s intake system. The compressor housing is usually located at the front end of the turbocharger and is connected to the engine’s intake system. 

1. Flow Path Design

The flow path inside the compressor housing is complex and usually spiral-shaped, guiding air into the compressor impeller and discharging the compressed air. To reduce air flow resistance, the surface of the flow path needs to be smooth enough.

 2. Materials and Manufacturing Process

The compressor housing operates at relatively low temperatures and mainly bears aerodynamic loads. Therefore, materials with characteristics such as lightweight, good mechanical properties, and good processing performance are required. Generally, aluminum alloy is used to manufacture the compressor housing. Aluminum alloy has sufficient strength and toughness at room temperature and can withstand the pressure of compressed air. Aluminum alloy is easy to cast and machine, suitable for the design of complex flow paths. In addition, the casing is usually made by low-pressure casting, which can improve the surface quality and internal density of the casing and reduce defects.

 3. Maintenance and Precautions

Regularly check the sealing performance between the compressor housing and the compressor impeller to prevent air leakage.

Cleaning and maintenance: Regularly clean the dust and impurities inside the compressor housing to avoid affecting the air flow efficiency.

Avoid external impact: The housing wall is relatively thin, and external impact should be avoided to prevent deformation or damage.
