What is the difference between turbochargers and superchargers?

A supercharger is an air pump that rotates by being driven by the engine through a belt or chain linked to the engine’s crankshaft.

Even though it uses some power, a supercharger normally rotates at a speed that’s proportional to the engine speed; thus, its additional pressure output is generally stable, resulting in fast and relatively predictable power delivery. The primary benefit of a supercharger is this type of power delivery.

On the other hand, a turbocharger  is composed of two turbine wheels, which are similar to fan blades, and it’s driven by the engine’s exhaust pressure and heat.

Both turbine wheels are mounted at the opposite ends of the same shaft, and each of the wheels is carried in its chamber. The exhaust pressure and heat (hot side) spin one turbine wheel, which in turn powers another turbine wheel (cold side) that pressurizes the air-fuel mixture, forcing more into the engine’s cylinders.

The power increase sometimes takes a while to kick in since it takes time to spin the turbine wheels fast enough to build up the added pressure after the throttle is pressed. This is commonly known as turbo lag. However, sometimes, it may come on suddenly in a rush, which can make the vehicle harder to control.A turbocharger bleeds off less power than a supercharger since it’s driven by the engine’s exhaust anyway, which is beneficial.
