The Real Cost of Compressor Wheels.
In the traditional process, the compressor wheel is made of aluminum. Aluminum is the preferred material for compressor wheels because of its low cost and low production process requirements. However, because of the low hardness of aluminum, in order to make a stronger impeller, post-processing is essential.
The later production process consists of heat treatment and solution treatment to manufacture a stronger compress wheel. It is these post-treatments that increase the cost of the compressor impeller, but this step is necessary.
Effects of Weak Cast Material
If the compressor wheel has been produced from weak cast materials, the blade will start to bend as the pressure of the air and the load on each blade increases;
As the wheel continues to spin at high speeds the blades will continuously bend backwards and forwards;
This completely changes the compressor map and the compressor efficiency and it means the wheels do not perform like they are designed to.
Aluminum is very flexible, so although it may bend at the highest speed, the blade will return to its original position as the wheel slows down. The wheel may look fine, but if you compare the performance of a low-quality compressor wheel with a high-quality compressor wheel , you will find that when it reaches its maximum speed, the low-quality compressor wheel will lose efficiency and eventually fail. It all depends on the strength of the casting. It is difficult to visually recognize which post-casting process is used and the strength of the compressor wheel.
